Jerry Rosburg is fed up with the ‘bunch of crap’ thrown at Russell Wilson

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Jerry Rosburg is tired of seeing Russell Wilson shredded on social media and in the court of public opinion — as was the case Thursday when Barstool Sports tweeted a story about Broncos Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe’s comments on the future quarterback.

Correction — “Hall-of-Fame” quarterback. Because Rosburg used that to describe Wilson during his third free-wheeling press conference in as many days Friday.

And the interim head coach had quite enough of what’s been tossed at the collective wall about the embattled No. 3 in recent weeks.

“I’ve gotta mind my vocabulary here — what’s the substitute word? CRAP,” Rosburg emphasized Friday. “OK? It’s a bunch of crap.”

Nathaniel Hackett defended Wilson before his Boxing Day sacking. But not like this.

Further, when Jerry Jeudy stood up for Wilson on social-media Thursday, the Broncos’ interim coach loved it and lapped it up.

“At some point in time, it’s really important that those that know you best stand up for you, and sometimes that’s a difficult thing to do because you get yourself messy in the process,” Rosburg said.

“But he saw his teammate, friend and comrade laid low and he he dug in and stood up with great courage and conviction about the truth, I would say. So, yeah, he’s my hero today.”

Rosburg felt the same about the other Broncos who defended Wilson. WRs KJ Hamler and Kendall Hinton and LT Garett Bolles all took to social media to defend their quarterback. Ex-Broncos RB Melvin Gordon — now on the Chiefs’ practice squad — did the same.

“And I really appreciate those people that did that because Russell Wilson, I’ve watched him practice out here and I see what he does. I see a Hall-of-Fame quarterback in practice on the practice field,” Rosburg said.

“Now, our jobs as coaches and teammates, if we really want to make a statement. We’ll make it on Sunday. We’ll play our — we’ll play well. And we’ll coach well, and we’ll give him the opportunities that he deserves to show what a great quarterback he is. That’s action.

“So, all the other things that we may say, out there, they’ll have no value unless we go out there and play that way.”

That being said, Rosburg expects the best of Wilson — in part because of what he said he saw this week.

“I had a very high opinion of Russell Wilson prior to my arrival here. I developed an even higher appreciation and affection for Russell Wilson upon my arrival here,” Rosburg said.

“And my opinion of Russell Wilson has has been never been higher than than it’s been because of his actions this week. I’ve never had a higher opinion of him than I have this week.

“Because what he showed me — I saw in Russell Wilson things that I have not seen.”

Which begged my question: What things are those?

“We’ll see on Sunday.”

Indeed.

The Broncos are playing out the string in terms of defining their season by playoff participation — or the lack thereof.

However that doesn’t mean this week’s game lacks drama or relevance. Because with Hackett now dismissed and their interim head coach banging the table for Wilson, the Broncos are about to start finding out the degree to which their deposed coach was the problem with the offense and the QB’s career-worst season.

Rosburg believes in Wilson. So do Wilson’s offensive teammates.

But belief needs to translate into results — starting Sunday against the team with seven consecutive AFC West titles.
