CU appears poised to step into Prime Time.
According to a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel, current Jackson State head coach and Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders is poised to become the Buffaloes’ next head football coach, and that in recent days Sanders worked on procuring members of what would be his coaching and support staff.
Per Thamel’s report, Sanders has already contacted at least one “prominent” player in the transfer portal, compelling him to wait on making a decision until after Sanders takes the reins in Boulder.
Sanders already confirmed earlier this week that CU offered him the job.
Speculation swirled around Sanders in recent days, with reports and chatter linking him at various times to CU, Cincinnati and South Florida. CU is the only one of those schools currently in a Power Five conference, although Cincinnati will join the Big XII next year.
Thamel also reported that CU’s football support staff has worked on material in advance of Sanders taking the job.
Jackson State concludes its season Saturday in the SWAC Championship Game against Southern University. Sanders is 22-5 there, including 11-0 this season.
Yet despite the growing buzz connecting Sanders to Boulder, not all the i’s are dotted and the t’s crossed just yet, as a quote from a source on the CU football staff revealed.
“They’re not doing a great job of hiding this,” the source told Thamel. “If he backs out of this deal, it would be a huge problem for Colorado.”
Indeed it could, but the possibility of Pearl Street being Prime territory now seems more realistic than ever.
