Chase Edmonds goes from ‘fanboy’ to teammate of Russell Wilson

When the Broncos return from their bye next week, they’ll have a new face on their offense: RB Chase Edmonds. The 5-year veteran was a part of what Miami sent the Broncos in exchange for edge rusher Bradley Chubb on Tuesday.

But Edmonds won’t be a new face for at least one Bronco: their quarterback.

Wilson and Edmonds had a FaceTime conversation after the trade. But that wasn’t the first interaction between the two new teammates.

“It’s funny, because I ran into him last year at the Pro Bowl down in a restaurant,” Edmonds said in an interview that ran on the Broncos’ digital- and social-media channels Wednesday afternoon.

“And being a little fanboy, I told him — and this is before free agency — I kind of just told him, ‘Hey, bro, where you end up, I’m trying to slide to you just a little bit.’

“It’s just ironic and funny how certain things work out and God has mysterious ways of just doing what he does best, but I’m excited to be here.”

Edmonds visited UCHealth Training Center on Wednesday as part of finalizing the trade. He said in the Broncos-distributed interview that he planned to return to South Florida to “get some things situated while I can” during the bye.

When he returns to Denver on Sunday, it’s “all ball,” he said.

Edmonds added that he’s willing to take on any role. However, his strength is on third downs and in the passing game. Edmonds averaged 3.43 receptions per game for the Arizona Cardinals in the 2020 and 2021 seasons. As a part of the Dolphins’ running-back rotation, he averaged 9.6 yards per catch this year.

“Hopefully I can help in the short passing, intermediate [passing] game. That’s something I feel like I do excel at, and help Russell Wilson out with that,” Edmonds said. “And then come out there in pass pro, a change-of-pace back, whatever they need for the team.”

But at the minimum, the Broncos got a player who appears to be fully on-board with Wilson.
