Denver Broncos deal Bradley Chubb to Miami Dolphins

The Denver Broncos are moving on from longtime edge and former Pro Bowler Bradley Chubb.

The team sent him to the Miami Dolphins on Tuesday for a package that includes a 2023 first-round pick, according to Adam Schefter.

The move comes hours before the 2022 NFL Trade Deadline, as the Broncos have started off the season 3-5. Chubb is in the final year of his contract and would’ve needed to sign a new deal or be franchise tagged in order to stay in Colorado.

The full deal sees Miami trade a first-round pick in 2023 that was originally San Francisco’s, a fourth-rounder in 2024 and running back Chase Edmonds for Chubb and a fifth-round pick in 2025.

The deal gives the Broncos a first-rounder, their own pick was dealt to Seattle for Russell Wilson.

The fifth overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft out of NC State, Chubb is having one of his stronger years in an up-and-down career. Twice Chubb, 26, has been limited to seven games or fewer as injuries derailed his season, but in the three years he’s played eight or more games, he’s gone for over five or more sacks. His QB pressures, hits and tackles for a loss make him a dynamic defender.

Chubb chatted with 9News’ and 104.3 The Fan’s Broncos insider Mike Klis over the phone right after the trade.

“It was the city (Denver) that gave me my first opportunity to be in the NFL and live out my childhood dream,” Chubb told 9NEWS . “I’m much appreciative of everything and just looking forward to a new chapter in my life.”

“I wasn’t involved but I kinda figured out at the ending and closing part that things were happening,” Chubb said. “I’m just happy that I’m going to a good organization that’s on the up and up and hopefully I can be a catalyst to continue to help them get going where they need to be.”

This move was seemingly in the making for a while, with the Broncos signing Randy Gregory this offseason, drafting Nik Bonitto and moving Baron Browning to edge.

Last season Denver moved Chubb’s pass-rushing-partner and Broncos legend Von Miller to the Rams at the deadline. The Broncos got more back from Chubb, likely due to the Dolphins ability to either franchise tag or extend Chubb whereas Miller was about to be an unrestricted free agent.

Edmonds is a five-foot-nine, 210-pound back from Fordham. The former fourth-round pick of the Cardinals moved to Miami this past winter. He had a career year in 2021, rushing for 592 yards and two touchdowns and adding 311 yards through the air. In eight games this season Edmonds has 120 rushing yards on 42 carries and two touchdowns. He’s added 10 catches for 96 yards and a touchdown receiving.

The Edmonds add comes as the Broncos were looking for runners. Standout sophomore back Javonte Williams was lost for the season with a busted knee while veteran Melvin Gordon has struggled. Third-stringer Mike Boone got hurt and Denver brought in veteran Latavius Murray.
