Broncos injury report: In-flight exercise leads to “quite a bit” of practice for Wilson

Oct 26, 2022, 11:32 AM | Updated: 2:00 pm

Many of the Broncos spent their flight to London relaxing or sleeping as they tried to adjust their bodies to the 7-hour time-zone change they faced.

Russell Wilson said he spent half of it receiving treatment and doing high-knee kicks.

“I don’t really get jet-lagged too often,” Wilson told media after the Broncos’ Wednesday practice. “I’ve traveled enough to kind of get my system down.”

Furthermore, for Wilson, that entailed:

  • Two hours watching film
  • Four hours receiving treatment and walking up and down the aisles doing high-knee kicks
  • One hour sleeping
  • One hour watching film

“Everybody was knocked out and I was doing high knees, working on the legs and everything else, making sure I was ready to rock,” Wilson said.

He added that he rested for “two to three hours” after the team arrived in London.

And a day later, Wilson did what Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett described as “quite a bit” of work as the Broncos began their preparations for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Denver officially listed Wilson as limited, but he appears on track to playing despite a partial hamstring tear. And in Jacksonville, the Jaguars expect to see Wilson under center.

“I would anticipate personally that Russell [Wilson] plays,” Jaguars coach Doug Pederson said on a conference call Wednesday.

ILB Josey Jewell also saw limited work due to a knee sprain.

Six Broncos did not practice:

  • CB Essang Bassey (hamstring)
  • Edge rusher Baron Browning (hip)
  • WR Tyrie Cleveland (groin)
  • OT Cam Fleming (quadriceps)
  • NT Mike Purcell (knee)
  • S Caden Sterns (hip)

Bassey injured his hamstring nine days earlier against the Los Angeles Chargers. He did not practice last week, either.

Browning and Fleming are already ruled out for Sunday with their injuries, suffered in the second half of the 16-9 loss to the New York Jets. However, the Broncos did not put them on injured reserve, keeping open hopes that each could return after the bye against the Tennessee Titans.

As for Sterns, he missed the last two games with a lingering hip issue. He played through it until aggravating it prior to the Chargers game.

“It’s been something that he’s been dealing with for quite a while now, so we just want to make sure that he’s going to be OK long term,” Hackett said.

COMPTON CLOSER TO PLAYING

Offensive lineman Tom Compton practiced Wednesday for the first time since OTAs. Compton missed all of training camp and the regular season to date with a back issue, which landed him on the physically-unable-to-perform list.

Compton could give the Broncos another option at right tackle or on the interior up front.
