Avs captain Gabriel Landeskog gets another knee surgery, out for months

Oct 19, 2022, 10:26 AM

For the second time in less than year, Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog underwent knee surgery.

Head coach Jared Bednar announced the news on Wednesday after the team’s morning skate. Bednar said Landeskog is expected to out about 12 weeks.

That three month recovery would put Landeskog back on the ice sometime in late January, or about halfway through the team’s regular season. Landeskog went under the knife last March, before ultimately returning for the playoffs and helping lead the Avs to their first Stanley Cup since 2001.

The fact Landeskog had to get another surgery so soon is obviously concerning. He turns 30-years-old in November, and this bears watching how it will affect his play moving forward.

It also makes the fact he played in the postseason that much more impressive. Clearly he gutted that stretch of hockey out, desperate to help Colorado secure a championship. Landeskog scored 11 goals and added 11 assists, good for 22 points, in the 20 playoff games.

Colorado is 2-1-0 on the young season, but will now be without a key piece until well into 2023. It’ll be imperative other guys step us, as there’s no sugarcoating that losing Landeskog for so long is a big loss.
