Broncos will have a bit of a surprise starter tonight at right tackle

Sep 12, 2022, 2:29 PM

The Denver Broncos hope Billy Turner is their right tackle for the majority of the 2022 season.

That won’t happen to start the year tonight in Seattle.

Turner is out, still battling a knee injury that gave him problems this offseason and throughout training camp. Many thought Calvin Anderson would get the start if Turner couldn’t go, but that won’t be the case according to 104.3 The Fan host and former Broncos offensive tackle Orlando Franklin.

Anderson struggled during his reps in the preseason, so it makes sense head coach Nathaniel Hackett would give Fleming the start. He’s an eight-year NFL veteran, including stops with the Patriots, Cowboys, Giants and Broncos. He played in five games for Denver a season ago, starting four of them.

In his NFL career, Fleming’s appeared in 96 games with 46 of those as starts. He spent four years in New England protecting Tom Brady, including 20 starts over 47 games. If Fleming was good enough for Brady and Bill Belichick during that time, hopefully he’s good enough for Russell Wilson tonight.

It could be a brief stint for Fleming as the starter, as 9NEWS and 104.3 The Fan Broncos insider Mike Klis reported on Sunday night that Turner was 50/50 to play against the Seahawks. Clearly, he’s not quite ready, so Fleming will get a shot.

By any name — rebuild, retool — the Broncos are under construction

The Broncos may not say "rebuild," but by any reasonable definition, they're early into construction and public expectations will reflect it.
