Colorado Rockies promote first-round draft pick, add power to lineup

Aug 30, 2022, 1:32 PM

The Colorado Rockies are bolstering their lineup, calling up switch-hitter prospect Michael Toglia.

Toglia joins the big club in Atlanta, where the team starts a series against the Braves on Tuesday. The 24-year-old from UCLA is ranked as the 11th-best Rockies prospect by Purple Row, 14th-best Rockies prospect by MLB.com and No. 28 on Fangraphs preseason ranking. Additionally, Baseball America says Toglia has the most power out of any minor leaguer the Rockies have.

The hype checks out with Toglia hitting 30 home runs between Double-A and Triple-A this season. Over nearly 500 plate appearances between Hartford and Albuquerque he’s slashed .249/.341/.511 with 51 XBH and 83 RBI.

Toglia was drafted in the first round at 23rd overall in 2019 after a very good college career. The left-handed fielder who plays first and corner outfield spent less than 20 games at Triple-A, where he’s been one of the Isotopes’ best hitters this month. Toglia played in the Futures Game last summer.

If Toglia debuts on Tuesday, he will become the 20,215th major league player ever.

The Rockies also announced that they have recalled Sean Bouchard from Triple-A Albuquerque and optioned outfielders Wynton Bernard and Sam Hilliard to Triple-A.

Toglia should get some at bats in September with Colorado out of the playoff picture.
