Russell Wilson is on the NFL Top 100 list … but at his lowest-ever spot

Aug 14, 2022, 10:07 PM | Updated: 10:16 pm

The Broncos placed two players in the NFL Top 100 … but for both of them, they fell steeply from their previous ranking in the annual, player-voted survey that NFL Network began announcing Sunday night.

Quarterback Russell Wilson ranked 61st, while safety Justin Simmons checked in 20 spots lower.

For Simmons, this is the second consecutive year he made the NFL Top 100. Last year, he ranked 45th.

But the story is Wilson, who dropped from No. 12 to No. 61 in the players’ voting despite making his ninth Pro Bowl appearance last season. Wilson posted his seventh passer rating of at least 100.0 in 10 seasons last year, but his ESPN QBR of 54.7 was the lowest figure of his career.

This is the lowest rank of Wilson’s career. In 2013, after his rookie season, he ranked 51st. After that, he never ranked outside of the top 25 players.

Wilson’s career Top 100 rankings:

  • 2013: 51
  • 2014: 20
  • 2015: 22
  • 2016: 17
  • 2017: 24
  • 2018: 11
  • 2019: 25
  • 2020: 2
  • 2021: 12
  • 2022: 61

It seems unlikely that any other Broncos remain to be unveiled in the coming weeks, when the NFL announces the top 50 players.

Edge rusher Bradley Chubb ranked No. 40 last year, but after an injury-plagued, zero-sack season, it would be a shock if he retains that spot. Left tackle. Garett Bolles was No. 82 in the 2021 rankings following his All-Pro season of 2020. But after failing to repeat that recognition a year later, one would not expect to see him rise at least 32 spots into the top 50.

Meanwhile, Von Miller landed at No. 93. Now with the Buffalo Bills, the Super Bowl 50 MVP was unranked last year after missing the entire 2020 campaign due to a dislocated perineal tendon.

But the focus was still Wilson. And if he is what the Broncos expect him to be, his spot on the 2022 NFL Top 100 list will appear comically low.

George Paton: Round 1 isn’t the only place where Broncos can find a quarterback

For Broncos general manager George Paton, the draft able answer to the Broncos’ quarterback quandary doesn’t have to come in the first round. “I do think it is a good quarterback class. There’s seven, eight quarterbacks that we like that (we) think can play in the league one day,” Paton said during a pre-draft press […]
