TRAINING CAMP 2022

The Broncos are getting dangerously thin at wide receiver

Aug 9, 2022, 2:42 PM

Injuries are starting to pile up for the Broncos, seemingly all at the same position. The wide receiver room seems jinxed thus far in training camp, as more and more members of that group are getting nicked up.

It’s only been 11 days, but the number of targets for Russell Wilson are dwindling. On Tuesday, they were few and far between.

First, Tim Patrick was lost for the season. The veteran wideout tearing an ACL was without a doubt the lowlight of training camp.

Then, Tyrie Cleveland was lost for multiple weeks after taking a hit to the throat. Most likely, he’ll be sidelined until the regular season rolls around.

And now, two more players are on the list of walking wounded. Courtland Sutton was held out of practice due to a shoulder injury, while K.J. Hamler was held out as he continues to recover from the knee injury he suffered last season.

This left Wilson with an odd assortment of wideouts to throw to. During most drills, the quarterback was left with Jerry Jeudy, Kendall Hinton, Seth Williams and Brandon Johnson.

Johnson started training camp fourth on the depth chart. On Tuesday, he was running with the ones.

While the injury to Sutton doesn’t appear to be serious, it does bring the Broncos situation to light. If they suffer another injury to one of their top wideouts, Denver is going to be ridiculously thin at the position. What was once seen as a team strength is now a potential liability.

Hopefully, Sutton returns soon and Hamler gets to the point where he’s able to carry a full workload. But until then, the Broncos are going to be searching for depth, backup players who might be thrust into playing meaningful snaps.

That situation was on full display on Tuesday. The Broncos are getting thin at wide receiver.
