Mile High Monday: New uniforms would be welcomed for the Broncos

The Denver Broncos begin training camp this week! Get ready to ride with the Broncos this year, and if you’re going out to UC Health Training Center for camp you will see a great show.

I like when camp starts. It’s a yearly tradition I’ve loved even before I was in the media and was cutting out of work early to drive to Greeley to watch the Broncos practice. It’s a sign that the regular season is right around the corner.

I also like contemplating life and sports when driving around with the top down on my old Jeep TJ! The following is a result of those trips during the week.

Buckle up, let’s take a ride through my thoughts.

Back in Black

There are several NFL teams debuting alternate helmets and uniforms for the 2022 season, but the Broncos will not be one of them. Our very own Andrew Mason has reported that the Broncos were waiting for new ownership to take over before having an extra expenditure like new jerseys, Ring of Fame induction ceremonies, etc. I’ve written before in “Mile High Monday” about how I believe the Broncos need new jerseys and a new logo after the current one has been the team’s look since 1997.

It’s a new era for the Broncos, and with that comes a ton of excitement. The ownership situation should be finalized by the league in early August, and I expect this team to look at a new logo, new uniforms, and a new stadium soon. Things will take time, but I’d imagine the wheels will be in motion for these changes – much-needed changes in my opinion.

Teams around the league are featuring a blacked out helmet this season for certain games (the Cincinnati Bengals went with all white helmets too). The NFL has toyed around with “color rush” jerseys for some time with varying results. Some of those jerseys looked good, some looked awful, but none looked great. These new blacked out helmets and jerseys do look great, and the league seems to have gotten this version right.

I can’t wait until the Broncos get a uniform update. If designed the right way, a black helmet or blacked out Broncos uniforms would look sweet. I remember back in the day there were some all-black John Elway jerseys made by Starter. The team never wore those uniforms, but they do look incredible. You don’t see them too often anymore, but anytime I see a fan with one of those black Elway jerseys on I do get a bit jealous. Hopefully next year, Broncos fans will enjoy a new look – or at least an alternate look – when it comes to jerseys and helmets.

Dialed In

Russell Wilson is dialed in. There is no doubt that Wilson works his tail off to keep his skill, his body, and his mind at the top of the game. Even when traveling across the world on his private jet, Wilson is never too far away from getting some passes in on a practice field. What drives Wilson, already a Hall of Fame level quarterback, is what fascinates me.

Wilson wants to be remembered as one of the best to ever play the game. Right now, Wilson is a Pro Bowl caliber quarterback, but when he won his title (Super Bowl 48) it was mostly due to the great defense of the Seattle Seahawks. Wilson was a young quarterback at the time, and he didn’t have to carry the team because of the “Legion of Boom” on the other side of the ball. The next time Wilson was back in the big game, Super Bowl 49, it was his pass – an interception thrown to the New England Patriots – that led to a loss.

He’s never been able to make up for that mistake. Instead of staying in a championship window, the Seahawks never made it back to the Super Bowl. Wilson’s last play in the ultimate game was a mistake, and that is something that must privately haunt him. I’m sure he doesn’t dwell on the play, but I’m also certain he would like to erase that memory as the final one about him in the Super Bowl.

I want Wilson to prove all the doubters wrong this year (more on that in a bit). He wants to play around seven more years in the NFL, and he wants to retire with the Broncos. It’s not outlandish to believe that Wilson will get more championships here in Denver than he did in Seattle. If he wins a couple of Super Bowls with the Broncos, Wilson will be in the conversation as one of the best of all time – and that’s what drives him.

Hitting Trolls with Truth

I don’t give internet trolls my time. Life is about energy, and it’s not worth my time to respond to someone with negative energy. It’s why I rarely get into Twitter fights, which I see as completely pathetic. However, I do see plenty of misconceptions about Wilson that need to be changed out there – with many of these messages coming from bitter or misinformed Seahawks reporters and fans.

Wilson holds onto the ball too long! That’s something I’ve heard time and time again, but there is ZERO advanced data that will back that up. Wilson ranks at or below the league average when it comes to metrics like snap-to-pass, time-in-pocket, and time-before-pass. The protection for Wilson was among the worst in the league during his 10 seasons with the Seahawks. He would have to extend plays with his legs, and some saw that as holding onto the ball too long. That’s simply an untrue notion now spread by Seahawks fans and media getting ready for Geno Smith as their starter in 2022 – good luck with that.

Wilson will overlook wide open first reads while looking for the big play! First off, anyone who understands football will know that a first read will ALWAYS be thrown to as that’s how the play is designed. Yes, Wilson would have to play “hero ball” at times because the Seahawks would not build a lead then look to him to go win the game at the end. Wilson will not overlook a wide open first read, and you’re being obtuse to think otherwise. The design of the offense was largely garbage in Seattle, and it certainly was out of date. Wilson was working in a bad system and trying to do his best. He did a pretty good job of propping up that out-of-date offense while running for his life behind a trash offensive line.

Seattle fans used to love Wilson. He gave them a chance to upgrade the offensive line, modernize their offense, build things around him, and that didn’t happen. Now, after parting ways with Seattle, Wilson is the enemy to Seahawks fans. With that comes bitter fans and media spreading lies and misinformation. Hate Wilson, dislike Wilson, roll your eyes at Wilson all you want – I’m fine with that. However, don’t lie with points that don’t make sense and cannot be backed up by film or advanced data.

Not So Secret Wars

Over the weekend, nerds like me were over the moon with much of the news coming out of San Diego Comic Con. Every year, SDCC is the biggest stop for nerds across the globe. It used to be mostly about comic books, but with the popularity of superhero movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it has now become a time when big news about upcoming projects is revealed.

During SDCC this year, MCU president Kevin Feige revealed titles and a timeline for Marvel “Phase Five” and “Phase Six.” We are currently in “Phase Four” of the MCU, and it has earned the title “Phase Bore” by fans out there. After the Thanos saga in “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame” the MCU has been a bit off the mark. There is one upcoming event in the MCU that can turn things around; Secret Wars.

Feige revealed that “Avengers: Secret Wars” would be coming to movie theaters in about five years. Before Secret Wars hits, the MCU will have several projects that lead up to this big moment. I won’t spoil the plotline of Secret Wars, but just know it was one of the biggest events in all of comic book history when it was released back in the mid-80s. Marvel did a second Secret Wars in 2015, and that was a nice update on the classic story. According to internet rumors, this movie will be a combination of both stories.
