Report: Even with Connelly’s departure, Jokic isn’t going anywhere

May 27, 2022, 9:45 AM

Nikola Jokic said moments after the season ended that he would sign a contract extension with the Denver Nuggets if the club offered it.

On Friday, The Athletic reported that recent changes in the Nuggets’ front office would not impact Jokic’s feelings.

Jokic is expected to become the highest-paid player in league history this summer when he signs a five-year $260 million supermax extension.

The big man is the first center to win multiple MVPs in 40 years, each of the past two seasons. The sweet-footed Serbian led the Nuggets to the postseason in 2022, averaging 27.1 points, 13.8 rebounds and 7.9 helpers a contest.

Tim Connelly left to become the President of Basketball Operations for the Minnesota Timberwolves earlier this week. The former Nuggets boss drafted and signed Jokic to multiple extensions. The new Nuggets top man, Calvin Booth—the team’s General Manager—has a good relationship with Jokic as well.

The Athletic detailed constant communication between Jokic and the Nuggets this offseason, including Michael Malone.
