Russell Wilson says Broncos receivers are arguably the best in the NFL

May 23, 2022, 3:40 PM

The Denver Broncos held their first day of voluntary OTAs with the 2022 squad on Monday, and it was a good glimpse at what the team will look like this season.

Some big names like Melvin Gordon, Kareem Jackson and Brandon McManus were absent, but this is more or less the team that will take the field in Week 1 against Seattle. The rookies are here, free agency is over and it’s go time.

After practice, Broncos QB Russell Wilson met with the media and had glowing things to say about his new set of wide receivers and tight ends. When asked what surprised him about the group so far, he didn’t hold back in dishing out praise.

“Surprised me? I knew first of all that they were dedicated to the game. Their talent level is off the charts. I mean, Tim Patrick and Courtland (Sutton) and obviously Jerry Jeudy, those guys, they’re arguably some of the best guys to play this game right now,” Wilson said. “I think the thing you love about them though and jumps off is actually the little things. It’s the understanding of the game, how they sit in the front of the room, how they ask questions, how they’re constantly learning.”

That’s high praise coming from Wilson, but you definitely can make a case that Sutton, Jeudy, Patrick and KJ Hamler are one of the best wide receiver cores in the NFL. The units in Tampa Bay, Cincinnati and other places might have something to say about it, but the Broncos are right there.

Wilson mentioned how the receivers are some of the first in the weight room every morning and seem extremely motivated. He then expanded on that thought.

“Everybody’s committed. There’s guys that come in super early to work with me in the mornings. We all just kind of do our own thing as players — I think it’s got to be a player owned thing. That’s what we’re doing. It’s just tremendous to see guys like Jerry Jeudy, obviously guys like Courtland Sutton and Tim Patrick, those guys are so brilliant,” Wilson said.

And while those guys will get the headlines and be drafted highly on fantasy football teams throughout the country, Wilson seems to notice everyone. Even guys the average fan may not know.

“But also (Andrew) Beck and (Eric) ‘Sauby’ (Saubert), there’s so many other guys. The young guys, (Greg) Dulcich and Montrell (Washington), those guys have been coming early as well. I think the dedication, you guys saw a lot of good stuff out here today, a lot of touchdowns, a lot of good things. We’re going to have a really good football team,” Wilson added.

It’s day one of OTAs. It’s May. We get it. But Russell Wilson made it very clear on Monday the Broncos are preparing like crazy right now. And just like he said, that work combined with a lot of natural talent gives the team an excellent shot to be very good in 2022 and beyond.
