For the second time in a year, the Denver Broncos have stunned the Dallas Cowboys. This time it was off the field.
After multiple reports on Tuesday morning said pass rusher Randy Gregory was heading back to Dallas, the Broncos swooped in and stole him away.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo have the details, along with ESPN’s Ed Werder:
And so it’s the #Broncos — not the #Cowboys — that are in agreement with Randy Gregory. My understanding is Dallas insisted on contract language that Gregory did not like protecting themselves. So he heads to Denver.

Same deal for Randy Gregory with the #Broncos as he was to sign with the #Cowboys, source says. Five years, $70 million. https://t.co/GhyC2hAQBX

Source: #Broncos ranked Randy Gregory as top edge in UFA over Chandler Jones. Believed they were close to deal last night, then #Cowboys owner “Jerry Jones recruited the hell out of him.” Cowboys reportedly attempted to change contract after agreement. Broncos became the choice.

Gregory’s career has gotten off to an extremely rocky start. He has been suspended for 54 total games in his career, including 14 in 2016 for substance abuse, the entire 2017 season, two games in 2018 and the entire 2019 season. Gregory was also suspended the first six games of the 2020 season.
However, Gregory has 9.5 sacks the last two years and has only played in 50 career games, so there’s a lot of gas left in that tank.
Gregory joins D.J. Jones, who the Broncos inked on Monday night, as the first of the free agent signings by GM George Paton this year.
