Schefter: Wilson should get extension from Broncos, play six years in Denver minimum
Mar 8, 2022, 2:25 PM
Just two hours after breaking the NFL story of the offseason, Adam Schefter joined “Stokley and Zach” on 104.3 The Fan to discuss the Russell Wilson to the Broncos trade.
The entire interview is worth a listen, as Schefter has details on how the trade went down and also clears up some misconceptions about Aaron Rodgers.
But perhaps the most interesting part is when Brandon Stokley asked Schefter about a potential contract extension for Wilson with the Broncos. Right now, Wilson is under contract for two more years, through the 2023 season.
“Well, they have not yet talked about it, they have not yet agreed to anything. But, look, I don’t think Denver makes a move like this and lands a quarterback like this without there being some sort of understanding ‘hey, let’s work on this, let’s figure this out.’ I’m sure that the two sides will get to it and that in time Russell Wilson will get an extension from Denver,” Schefter told Stokley and Zach.
Wilson is currently scheduled to make $24M in 2022 and $27M in 2023 before his contract ends. But Schefter says that won’t be anywhere close to when he’s done with football.
“He wants to keep playing. He doesn’t believe he’s slowing down at all. He’s 33-years-old and he’s got two years left on the contract and we’ve seen quarterbacks play close to or into their 40s now. Russell Wilson, I’m sure, is planning to be the quarterback of this franchise for the next half-dozen years, minimum,” Schefter said.
Finally, after a painful six seasons without quarterback, Denver has its answer under center. And Wilson should be here for a long, long time.
What a day!
