Clayton: The clock is ticking as the Aaron Rodgers situation nears an end

Feb 24, 2022, 3:02 PM

The waiting game continues on the Aaron Rodgers front.

The Broncos have to stay loose. Even though it looks like he could be staying in Green Bay, things are starting to get tense. Now, anything can happen.

Even though the Packers cleared more than $3 million of cap room on Thursday with two restructured contracts, they are still around $38 million over the cap.

There seems to be no progress on what is happening with wide receiver Davante Adams. They haven’t franchised him yet. There are no negotiations going on. The clock is ticking. March 8 is the last date to apply the tag.

Then, there are reports of some tensions with Rodgers and the front office. Stories surfaced on Thursday that Rodgers now wants $50 million per year to stay. He also wants the Packers to keep Adams.

Green Bay has until the end of the combine next week to figure this out.

The quarterback market isn’t ripe for a lot of trades. The quarterback market in the draft doesn’t look good. There may be three first-round quarterbacks, but no one is sure that the three are true NFL starters. Plus, it probably doesn’t help things that the Packers aren’t listening to any trade requests for quarterback Jordan Love. You wonder if there is any trade interest in Love.

Rodgers broke up with his finance. He said a decision on his football future is coming soon. Stay tuned. Anything is in play.
