The Broncos shouldn’t be afraid of hiring a “retread” head coach

Jan 11, 2022, 6:00 AM

The Vic Fangio era is officially over. He can’t hurt Broncos Country anymore.

Now, it’s time for George Paton to find a new head coach. This is where he will really make his mark as a general. Many in Broncos Country want a young, hot-shot, offensive-minded head coach. That wouldn’t be a bad move, but don’t fear the “retread” head coach.

The “retread” head coach gets a lot of flack, but the Broncos have only had success with “retread” head coaches. Mike Shanahan, Gary Kubiak and John Fox were all “retreads.”

This year, particularly, there are some great experienced head coaches on the market like Brian Flores, Doug Pederson, Dan Quinn, Jim Caldwell and maybe even Jim Harbaugh. These are guys with winning records as head coaches, not abject disasters somewhere looking to reinvent themselves with a new team.

It’s not a dumb move to try and find the next Sean McVay or Kyle Shanahan, but it’s rare to see so many successful head coaches on the market. The Broncos should pounce at the opportunity to hire a Super Bowl-winning head coach like Doug Pederson, or a man with a winning record with the Detroit Lions like Jim Caldwell, or a man who took the Atlanta Falcons to a Super Bowl.

These guys are on the market for a reason. It did go wrong somewhere in their coaching tenure, but the success and resume cannot be denied.

How has Atlanta looked since firing Dan Quinn? Have the Lions replaced Jim Caldwell with anyone worth mentioning? How did the Dolphins look before Brian Flores showed up?

There is no need to try and find the next hot shot offensive boy genius head coach. There are plenty of proven winners on the market, George Paton would be wise to go get one.

George Paton: Round 1 isn’t the only place where Broncos can find a quarterback

For Broncos general manager George Paton, the draft able answer to the Broncos’ quarterback quandary doesn’t have to come in the first round. “I do think it is a good quarterback class. There’s seven, eight quarterbacks that we like that (we) think can play in the league one day,” Paton said during a pre-draft press […]
