Clayton: Drew Lock starting for Broncos a scary prospect

Dec 21, 2021, 5:06 PM

The slim playoff hopes of the Denver Broncos now may rely on the play of quarterback Drew Lock.

That’s scary. We know Teddy Bridgewater won’t play this week because of a concussion. Lock gets the start. Reporters even asked Vic Fangio is he considered going to Brett Rypien. He wasn’t. It’s Lock or bust.

This is Lock’s first start of the year. It’s possible he may get another start or two depending on how Bridgewater recovers. What’s amazing is looking at Lock’s record. This is his third year. His record is 8-10. After completing 64.1 percent of his passes as a rookie, his numbers have dropped ever since. Last year he completed 57.3 percent of his passes and tied for the league lead with 15 interceptions.

Turnovers have been a big part of his game. His yards per attempt have gone from 6.5 yards per attempt to 6.6 in 2020 and to 5.7 this season. His QBR dropped from 50.2 to 41.2 to 4.4 this year.

One of keys this weekend is to hook up with Courtland Sutton, who struggled catching the ball last week. They need as much as they can from the passing offense. With Lock, though, you wonder. It may not look good.
