Clayton: Broncos passing game can get right vs. Lions

Dec 8, 2021, 4:13 PM

Sunday’s game against Detroit is a chance for the Broncos to get things right on offense for the final stretch.

The offense was off in last week’s loss to Kansas City. The Broncos have one of the most talented receiving corps in football, but Teddy Bridgewater completed only two passes to Courtland Sutton and one to Tim Patrick. The two combined for only 24 yards receiving. And this comes after they just signed extensions totalling more than $25 million a year.

Going against Detroit is advantageous. They have only won one game and one tie. They are beatable. The passing game needs balance.

“You just do it within the system,” Bridgewater said. “We have plays that are dialed up to get the guys the ball specifically. We might come out of the huddle and say we want to throw the ball to Courtland Sutton here, and they play a coverage that takes Courtland away. Now Jerry Jeudy gets an opportunity to catch a pass. That’s just how it works.’’

“We might call a play for Tim Patrick and the ball might go to Courtland.”

Vic Fangio discussed the passing game:

“Our whole passing game needs to improve a little bit,” Fangio said. “We never got into a rhythm last week in our last game. The week before, we didn’t have a lot of yards either. We just need to get our passing game as a hole in a better rhythm.”

Going against the Lions should help.

There’s seven, eight quarterbacks that we like that (we) think can play in the league one day,” Paton said during a pre-draft press […]
