Clayton: Kyle Fuller comeback helped spark Broncos stunner in Dallas

The Broncos stunned the NFL with their blowout win over Dallas. What was stunning for the Broncos was the return of Kyle Fuller.

Fuller turned out to be one of the many stars of the game. He played so well that Vic Fangio ended up giving him a game ball. When Bryce Callahan went on injured reserve, Fuller took a three-day crash course to learn the slot cornerback position. They gave him a chance to play, and he did well. Then Pat Surtain II went down with a knee injury, and Fuller got a chance to get back an outside cornerback position.

He ended up playing 60 plays. In the three games before that, after he was benched, he had only four plays total. Now, the Broncos have to rely on Fuller and Ronald Darby to get them through the next few weeks until Surtain gets back. Callahan is on injured reserve, so he could be back in maybe three weeks.

For the season, Fuller has been beaten for 16 completions in 31 passes thrown at him. He’s given up 278 yards and two touchdowns.

“There’s a guy that had never played nickel in his whole career,” Fangio said. “He got a three-day crash course on it and was set to play, then he had to go to left corner first, and then he had to go to right corner. He was ready. Kyle is a pro. He hasn’t been happy with his role of late. We’ve talked about it, but he was ready to go. He embraced the challenge of playing nickel with one week of preparations.”

What a comeback.
