Clayton: The next two games could be feasting time for Fangio’s defense

Good defensive coaches excel against rookie quarterbacks.

Bill Belichick may be the best when facing first-year signal callers. He’s rarely going to lose a game to a rookie quarterback.

Vic Fangio is a good coach. His defense should do great in the upcoming games against Trevor Lawrence and Zac Wilson.

The Denver Post did a great job sorting through Fangio’s past and posted that he’s 18-9 against rookie quarterbacks. In those games, his defenses have racked up 24 interceptions.

What often happens is the rookie quarterback gets a bunch of yards. But much of that is that they are playing from behind in the second half.

Fangio will have so many ways of confusing Lawrence and Wilson because of the talent in the secondary. Ronald Darby won’t play in either game, but Patrick Surtain should do a good job as an outside corner. He took part in 16 plays in the opener.

The Broncos had a tougher week because of injuries. They lost Jerry Jeudy, Darby and guard Graham Glasgow. Bradley Chubb is questionable with his ankle injury. Looks like Shelby Harris and Shamar Stephen will be able to play.

It all sets up for Fangio’s defense to have a field day.
