Clayton: Aaron Rodgers to the Broncos could resume in 2022

Jul 27, 2021, 12:30 PM

Unless the Broncos trade for Deshaun Watson, the winner to the Drew Lock-Teddy Bridgewater quarterback battle will determine if they will be a playoff team in 2021.

Aaron Rodgers reported to camp on Tuesday and will stay in Green Bay this year. He’s off the trade market this season. When the quarterback and the Packers finalize his revised contract, there will be language that will lead to him being traded or being able to go to another team after this year.

That’s when the Broncos can get him.

But first, they have to decide about Watson. Ironically, even though Rodgers is the better quarterback, he will be available for a cheaper price than Watson.

The Houston Texans want three first-round choices and either two more high choices or two good players for their star quarterback. Rodgers will probably command a first- and maybe a second-round pick that can upgrade to a No. 1.

The reason is age. Rodgers is in the latter stages of his career. Watson is young. While Rodgers is either the No. 2 or No. 3 quarterback in the league, Watson is No. 5 and has a lot of good football ahead of him.

The Philadelphia Eagles have the draft capital to get something done this year for Watson. They’re one of the few teams in that position.

For the Broncos all eyes have to be the on the Lock-Bridgewater competition. Bridgewater was able to get the Minnesota Vikings to the playoffs his rookie season. His knee injury did set him back. But he’s an accurate, smart quarterback who doesn’t through many interceptions. Lock has more talent, but he needs to show it this season.

This should make for an interesting summer. The thoughts to Rodgers to Denver could resume next year.
