Broncos quarterback battle may take all three preseason games

Jul 20, 2021, 11:44 AM | Updated: 11:45 am

According to a report from NFL Network’s James Palmer, a quarterback decision is not expected to be made until potentially all three preseason games are over.

“This could go, to my understanding, through all three preseason games before they make a decision,” Palmer said. “That’s where they stand right now when they look at both of these quarterbacks.”

The quarterback battle between Drew Lock and Teddy Bridgewater will start soon with the Broncos reporting for training camp on July 27.

Palmer reported that the Broncos’ evaluation is nowhere near complete.

“In the eyes of the Broncos there’s about two to three percent of their evaluation done and that will start at training camp,” Palmer said. “They do think Drew Lock was thrown into the fire as their starter last year without an offseason, but they believe his footwork is better, his accuracy is better and his decision making is better.

“With Teddy Bridgewater they believe he is picking up this playbook quickly and they love how quick his decision making is.”

Bridgewater through the 2020 season had a 69.1 completion percentage with 3,733 yards, 15 passing touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Lock had a 57.3 completion percentage with 2,933 yards, 16 passing touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

While the quarterback competition begins, Palmer believes it’ll come down to two main characteristics the Broncos coaching staff will be looking for.

“The biggest thing to look for is who makes fewer mistakes,” Palmer said. “The two main parts of that are if you make a mistake is it correctable and if you make a mistake is it catastrophic. Who makes this offense better and how makes fewer mistakes will win this job.”
