Unseld Jr. is familiar with the organization given his family ties since his father, Wes Unseld, was a Hall of Famer, league MVP and five-time All-Star who helped lead Washington to its only championship in franchise history during the 1977-78 season.
Unseld, Jr. spent 15 years as an assistant coach with the Wizards, Warriors, Magic and currently with the Nuggets.
The Wizards decided not to bring back Scott Brooks last month, with general manager Tommy Sheppard saying the team is looking for a “great communicator” in its next coach.
Brooks finished his five seasons with the Wizards with a 183-207 record, although he made the playoffs three times.
