Broncos Country should hope Lock wins QB competition

May 11, 2021, 12:00 AM

The NFL Draft is over, and the Denver Broncos did not select a quarterback. Justin Fields and Mac Jones were sitting there at No. 9, and general manager George Paton chose not to move forward with either.

We can sit around and hope for Aaron Rodgers to fall into the Broncos’ lap, which still could happen, but the most likely scenario is a Drew Lock vs. Teddy Bridgewater showdown for Denver’s starting quarterback spot.

It’s not ideal, but Broncos Country should be rooting for Lock to win the job.

Bridgewater is the ideal backup in the NFL. He’s smart, accurate and great in the locker room. However, we have seen the Bridgewater story, and it is average at best. If Lock loses this competition, the season is all but over.

Bridgewater is not the long-term answer.

If Lock wins this competition, hope is still alive. Has he figured it out? Has he taken the next step he needed?

This is not to say if Lock beats out Bridgewater, then he is the guy and all is saved. That is not the case. But it gives Broncos Country hope. It allows Denver to have confidence in its young quarterback to go out there and keep improving.

If Lock can’t beat out Bridgewater, not only is he not the guy, but the Broncos don’t have their quarterback of the future on the roster.

Broncos Country should be rooting for Lock to win this quarterback competition; it’s the only way hope stays alive in 2021.
