Denver to host Concacaf Nations League Finals in June

Apr 15, 2021, 11:38 AM

Empower Field at Mile High will play host to the inaugural Concacaf Nations League Finals in early June, the soccer confederation announced on Thursday.

The semifinal stage will take place on Thursday, June 3, and will feature initial matches of Honduras vs. the United States followed by Mexico vs. Costa Rica.

Winners from each game will play in the final on Sunday, June 6, to crown the first ever CNL champion with a third-place game scheduled beforehand.

“The Concacaf Nations League includes all 41 of our Member Associations, making it a true celebration of our football, our region and our unity as One Concacaf,” Concacaf President and FIFA Vice President Victor Montagliani said in a release.

“The 2019 group stage was a huge success in delivering more competitive football for all men’s national teams across Concacaf. Now we can look forward to a great final four in the outstanding facility that is Denver’s Empower Field at Mile High, and to crowning a first ever Concacaf Nations League champion.”

Denver had been rumored as the “front-runner” to host the CNL Finals in early March after Concacaf rescheduled the four-team finals in September.

The final stage of the CNL was originally supposed to kick off in June 2020 in Houston and Dallas, but the games were suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Previously, Empower Field at Mile High has hosted several high-profile soccer events in the past, including three Concacaf Gold Cups — in 2013, 2017 and 2019.

“We are extremely grateful to Concacaf for selecting Empower Field at Mile High and Denver as the host for the inaugural Concacaf Nations League Finals,” Empower Field at Mile High Stadium General Manager Jay Roberts said. “Opening our doors for the first large scale event since the end of the 2019 football season is exciting for our organization as well as the entire community.

“This June, we look forward to providing an enjoyable, safe experience for fans and showcasing why Denver is a premier destination for world-class soccer.”

Capacity for games has initially been set at 42.6 percent, or approximately 32,000, similar to the current structure in place for the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.

A final decision on the number of tickets available will be announced in the coming weeks.

Those interested in attending matches should sign up at www.ConcacafNationsLeague.com to learn more about the event.

Tickets go on sale via Ticketmaster on April 26 at 10 a.m. MDT.
