Broncos snag QB without trading up in new mock draft

Apr 8, 2021, 11:36 AM

In the latest two-round mock draft from CBS Sports NFL analyst Chris Trapasso, the Denver Broncos snag a quarterback without giving up any capital to move up.

With a little more clarity about who might go in the top 10 of the upcoming NFL Draft later this month, including the Carolina Panthers trading for Sam Darnold this week, Trapasso has quarterback Justin Fields falling all the way to No. 9 at the Broncos spot.

“After tons of speculation about trading up, Fields falls into the Broncos’ lap. Ideal,” Trapasso writes.

The pick would mean four quarterbacks go off the board in the top 10, with Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson and Trey Lance going 1-2-3 to the Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers.

Another top quarterback prospect, Mac Jones, falls to the New England Patriots at No. 16 in the mock.

The projection comes after speculation this week that Denver may look to trade up in the top 10, whether to the Panthers’ spot at No. 8 or the Atlanta Falcons position at No. 4.

However, “The Drive” co-host Tyler Polumbus said this week he’d rather the Broncos wait to see if someone — like Fields in Trapasso’s mock — drops to No. 9. If not, Denver should look for a backup elsewhere after the draft.

Last month, ahead of Ohio State’s pro day featuring Fields, NFL.com draft analyst Lance Zierlein also projected the Buckeyes quarterback to fall to Denver at No. 9.

“Selecting Fields would be a bold — but potentially necessary — move for the team to take the next step,” Zierlein said.
