Shelby Harris a “priority” for Broncos in free agency

Mar 4, 2021, 2:09 PM

As the NFL world inches closer to free agency later this month, the Denver Broncos have expressed their desire to keep Shelby Harris in orange and blue come next fall.

On Thursday, Broncos general manager George Paton said he’s spoken this offseason with Harris’ agent and that the defensive end is a “priority in free agency.”

“We’d love to have Shelby back. He’s a really good football player. He’s a good person,” Paton said. “I know Vic spoke with him. I spoke with him early. And he’s a guy that we want back.”

Harris, who spend the past two seasons on one-year deals with Denver, told “Nick & Cecil” last month that he’s focusing on his present — his family — and not necessarily his future.

“Whatever happens, happens. You know, you really can’t stress something you don’t have any control over at the moment,” Harris said. “So, honestly, for right now, it’s the offseason. We just had our fourth kid. So, I’ve been pretty busy already.”

Harris, who is an unrestricted free agent, said he’s grateful for a “support system” to lean on during what could be a stressful offseason.

“Just with this huge family, it’s kind of a big thing for all of us because we just all keep each other busy and not focused on it,” Harris said.

In 2020, Harris started just 11 games for the Broncos after a bout with COVID-19 kept him on the sidelines for all of November and a knee injury ended his season prematurely.
