Rockies “don’t have the budget” for Trevor Story extension

Mar 2, 2021, 12:11 PM | Updated: 12:24 pm

According to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman the Colorado Rockies are not expected to sign shortstop Trevor Story to a contract extension “anytime soon.”

In Heyman’s report he specifies that the Rockies “don’t have the budget” for any big signings, which heavily impacts Story who can become a free agent after the upcoming 2021 season.

Colorado’s payroll sits at just over $123.8 million for this season, per Cot’s Baseball Contracts. The Rockies are also expected to cover approximately $51 million of the $199 million remaining on Arenado’s contract, including all of his $35 million salary for 2021.

In 603 regular-season games over the past five years Story has notches 134 homers and 80 stolen bases. Per FanGraphs, his 17.9 WAR over that time span ranks fifth among MLB shortstops.

Story was recently ranked 16th in MLB Network’s countdown of the Top 100 Players Right Now entering the 2021 season.

Last week Story told The Denver Post that he has not talked to the Rockies about a contract extension.

“I’m focused on personally being the best teammate I can be,” he said. “I try not to look too far ahead. I’m trying to be where my feet are, which is right here in spring training with the Rockies.”
