Reports: Ex-Broncos DB Darrius Johnson passes away at 47

Feb 25, 2021, 12:57 PM

Per several reports via Twitter, former Denver Broncos defensive back and two-time Super Bowl champion Darrius Johnson has passed away at age 47.

Johnson, a fourth-round draft pick by the Broncos in 1996 out of Oklahoma, played in 61 games for Denver over four seasons, including the 1997 and 1998 Super Bowl squads.

In the run up to the Broncos second consecutive world championship during the 1998 season, Johnson grabbed two interceptions — one against the Miami Dolphins in the divisional round and another in Super Bowl XXXIII against the Atlanta Falcons.

Among those paying tribute to Johnson on Twitter on Thursday was Cale Gundy, Oklahoma co-offensive coordinator and Johnson’s teammate with the Sooners from 1992 to 1993.

Former Broncos offensive tackle George Foster also expressed his condolences via Twitter on Thursday.
