DMac: Making the case for Cam Newton to sign with the Broncos

Mike Shula, the current Broncos quarterbacks coach, was Cam Newton’s offensive coordinator during his best years in Carolina.

What’s the value of returning home when home is thousands of miles away? Well, it seems to be the plan for Carson Wentz as he reunites with Frank Reich in his new home in Indianapolis.

Perhaps, home isn’t an actual location. Perhaps, it’s whatever place that suits you best. It’s the fit, stupid.

One of the most ridiculous arguments you will hear in Denver is “Josh Allen wouldn’t have worked in Denver because the coaches wouldn’t have known how to use him.” Wow, you mean all the coaches who get paid very well here in Denver just intrinsically stink?

I’m not buying it. But for a second, I will tie half my brain behind my back and assume that the only way for a QB to work is to be with coaches who know how to use him.

Welcome home, Cam!

Mike Shula sure knew how to use his prize pupil as he was setting passing records and winning an MVP. Okay, fine, Von Miller became his daddy in Super Bowl 50 (as was pointed out to Newton by some extremely disrespectful teenagers recently). But, that doesn’t change what Cam did to get his team to that stage.

Could Newton find a new life in a comfortable old home, which just so happens to exist in a higher elevation?

Sure! I mean, why not? Especially because he would be working in tandem with Drew Lock. He would be competing with Drew Lock. He would be showing Drew Lock what leadership is all about.

For those who want to be critical about Newton for his fashion or look at me attitude, all I have to say is, get over yourselves. Leadership comes in many different forms and writing off Cam Newton because he makes you feel uncomfortable is beyond lame. Newton was nothing but professional in New England and stodgy ol’ Bill Belichick agreed with the style staccato slinger.

“Cam does a great job of connecting with everybody, whether it’s his teammates, his receivers, guys on defense, other people in the organization,” Belichick said last October to CBS Sports. “Again, I think the captain voting – not that that’s the ultimate or final determination of leadership – but I think the fact that he has been here a pretty short amount of time and earned that type of respect and support from his teammates is pretty impressive.

“But, I think it’s across the board. It’s the offensive line, it’s the receivers, it’s all the offensive players and coaches and it extends into other areas, as well – special teams and defense and other people in the organization. I think that we’ve all seen that and it’s impressive. It’s impressive. He’s here a lot, he’s in the building and he’s visible, he’s in sight and is connecting with people as much as any player. He’s in the building more than any player on the team, but he spends a lot of time talking and connecting and building relationships with those people. I mean, he has tremendous leadership, so it’s very impressive.”

But wait… he wears odd looking hats!!!!

Gimme a break!

Newton had a viral video moment when confronting a teen who was crazily disrespectful towards him. But, that incident happened as Cam was volunteering coaching a 7-on-7 teen football team through his charitable foundation.

Gee, what a jerk!

Cam is washed up.

Well… maybe. But, maybe he doesn’t need to be the full-time guy here. Maybe that guy is truly Drew Lock. Maybe Cam can show him modern leadership, not leadership grafted in old-timey cliches. And if Newton can get along with bitter Belichick, why in the world wouldn’t it work with hamburger-in-a-steakhouse Vic Fangio?

Listen, Deshaun Watson is the main target, as he should be. But why in the world do we think Andy Dalton would mesh better with Lock than Newton? When Young Jeezy is singin “Put On,” I can picture Lock singing along and Newton putting on an orange jersey.
