Two Denver Broncos listed as “strong” candidates to be released

With the salary cap expected to take a nosedive NFL.com’s Gregg Rosenthal listed the AFC’s likely candidates to be cut, with the Broncos’ Von Miller and Jurrell Casey making his list.

Rosenthal wrote that Miller has had a Hall of Fame career with the Broncos and could still have good years left in him, but hitting the market “is more likely”.

“The Broncos are in better salary cap shape than most, but this was always going to be an inflexion-point year for Miller, even if he wasn’t coming off a dislocated tendon in his ankle that forced him to miss all of last season, due to his contract’s club option for 2021,” Rosenthal wrote. “Miller’s performance had already dipped before the injury and the Broncos can save $18 million against the cap by declining the option.”

Denver acquired Casey from the Tennessee Titans in March of last year in exchange for a seventh-round pick, but missed most of the 2020 season due to injury.

“It was always going to be a challenge for Casey to reach the final season of a four-year, $60.4 million extension he originally signed with the Titans,” Rosenthal wrote. “The Broncos can save $11.9 million in cap space by cutting the 31-year-old.”

9News Broncos Insider Mike Klis reported last week that the Broncos and new general manager George Paton have yet to reach out to Miller to discuss his team option.

Per Over The Cap, the Broncos can save $18 million against the cap by declining Miller’s option and $11.9 million in cap space from cutting Casey.
