Inside Super Bowl 51 with Football Insider Cecil Lammey — Day 1

Jan 31, 2017, 12:00 AM | Updated: 7:45 am

Author’s note: This is the first Super Bowl I will be covering from start to finish, and I couldn’t be more excited about what’s in store during the week. In this daily journal, I will revisit some of the highlights of the day and take you behind the scenes of Super Bowl 51.

The morning began with an early alarm as I wanted to be at Denver International Airport at 4 a.m. My flight for Houston left around 6 a.m., and I was able to sit next to DMac (Darren McKee) on the way.

I closed my eyes for a quick nap, and next thing I knew we were already landing in Texas.

Arriving in Houston, the city was already abuzz about this game. There were banners hanging in the airport promoting the game, and our ride to the airport was full of Super Bowl talk.

When I got to radio row, things were barren as the setup for hundreds of shows across the country began. There’s enough room for roughly 250 radio stations to be here, and there’s television stages set up all around. I

t was the calm before the storm on Monday, and radio row is sure to be jam-packed with reporters, celebrities and athletes later this week.

During the day, I ran into several people I’ve known for years. I was able to chat with Bleacher Report’s NFL Draft expert Matt Miller, NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein, and SBNation Radio’s Robin Carlin, among others.

There’s going to be plenty of time this week for serious questions. So, at Opening Night on Monday I focused on less serious issues. In fact, most of my time was spent talking to players about their Air Jordan shoe collections.

Falcons defensive tackle Ra′Shede Hageman told me that I asked him the best question of the day when I asked what is his favorite pair of Jordan’s.

His answer, something I concur with, the “Flu Game” 12s.

Day One is in the books, and I can’t wait to see what the second day brings.
