Does Paxton Lynch have shot to start Week 1 for Broncos?

Aug 2, 2016, 9:36 AM | Updated: 11:53 am

Conventional thinking around Dove Valley early in Broncos training camp points to veteran Mark Sanchez taking the reins of the Denver offense, at least to start the season.

Sanchez, the seven-year veteran with 72 NFL starts under his belt (72 more than both rookie Paxton Lynch and second-year quarterback Trevor Siemian), appears to be the logical choice to run with the ones when camp breaks.

But, does Lynch, the club’s first-round pick, have a shot to be the starter?

BRONCOS: Mike Klis joins ‘Schlereth & Evans’

The Fan’s Broncos insider Cecil Lammey told “Schlereth & Evans” as much Tuesday morning.

“I like the mental progression from Paxton Lynch, and obviously Gary Kubiak does as well,” Lammey said.

After a strong practice Monday from Lynch, coupled with a red zone pick-six thrown by Sanchez during practice, Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak was effusive of Lynch in his post-practice press conference.

“I think one of the things for sure, is No. 12 (Lynch) is really stepping up. He’s making some progress,” Kubiak said. “I think they are all doing a good job. I would say the young kid has just gotten better each and every day.”

Lammey echoed Kubiak, saying Lynch is showing strong in terms of mental capacity and progression from practice to practice.

“We can’t make this decision now on Aug. 2, who the starter’s going to be against Carolina in the beginning of September, but it’s not out of the question with Paxton Lynch,” Lammey said.
